Place Resurgo Place will be the new home of the Moncton Museum, the Transportation Discovery Centre, and the Main Moncton Visitor Information Centre. A cutting edge and unique contemporary architectural design will help to reinvigorate the Arts and Culture district in Moncton, affirm this building’s significance in the minds of both local residents and visitors, and introduce a new experiential Discovery Centre that celebrates Moncton’s rich history as the transportation hub of Atlantic Canada.
The brilliant design saw the old Moncton Museum preserved while giving it a dynamic and modern new face, true to the museum’s history. The new structure consists mainly of a solid mass block, housing the support spaces as well as the main themed Transportation Discovery Gallery, a two-storey pavilion whose form is inspired by a train cowcatcher. An abundance of natural light will fill the space, with the exterior cladding consisting of concrete split-face block to match the existing cladding, new cut limestone, and glass, as well as the introduction of copper coloured metal cladding which relates back to the industrial nature of the transportation displayed in the museum.
Visitors will enjoy the two-storey interactive exhibit spaces located in the cowcatcher, a gallery mezzanine, an education centre, larger storage and archival spaces, larger gallery spaces, a temporary exhibit gallery, a group coats and lunchroom, as well as a gift shop and café. Another exciting slice of history can be appreciated in the museum, as the former City Hall façade, built in 1916, has been preserved and displayed within a new covered orientation atrium.
This fascinating architectural design will provide a unique cultural experience designed to educate and excite museum visitors, while establishing the Moncton Museum as a significant regional landmark for both locals and visitors to enjoy for years to come.
