This natural historic site, constructed in the late 1820’s, served as a barracks for British soldiers until 1869. Today the soldier’s barracks building is an integral part of Fredericton’s Garrison District and has been home to an expanded New Brunswick College of Craft and Design since 2010.
In order to preserve the historic building, replacement was required of the aging and deteriorated historical replica windows. Architecture that respected the original appearance of the structure was an integral part of the design, resulting in factory painted aluminum clad windows with painted wood on the interior side. Modern insulating glass units supplant the single glazing of the old units with the exterior layer of glass, creating a wavy appearance to reproduce the appearance of older historical glass.
This project celebrates the successful preservation and adaptation of a natural historic site, so it may remain relevant to other generations for the years to come. Through brilliant architectural design, rich history remains alive in this cherished building.
